Gravado ao vivo em Paris em 1976 e 1977, o segundo registo ao vivo dos Genesis contou, para além dos quatro 'resistentes', Collins, Hackett (saíria pouco tempo depois), Rutherford e Banks, com a participação de dois bateristas, Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes) e Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa, Weather Report)

O último álbum dos Genesis com Peter Gabriel, editado em 1974. Duplo, de forte carácter conceptual (Gabriel escreveu todas as letras e deu largas à imaginação para contar a história de um delinquente porto-riquenho em Nova Iorque, Rael de seu nome), esta obra constitui uma espécie de consagração da banda, com particular incidência para o sucesso obtido nos EUA. The Carpet Crawlers sucederia a I Know What I Like no campo dos singles relativamente bem sucedidos.

Considerado por muitos como o melhor trabalho dos Genesis. A afirmação de Hackett (se é que havia dúvidas) como um dos grandes guitarristas do século XX (nunca é demais ouvir o fantástico solo de Firth of Fifth). O único single de êxito da banda foi retirado do SEBP (I Know What I Like).
