Kaiser Chiefs formaram-se em 2003, em Leeds mas antes de 2003, os membros da banda eram integrantes da banda de rock Parva, formada em 1997. Após o fim de sua gravadora, a banda voltou às origens e adoptou um som indie, ajudando-os a atingir popularidade no Reino Unido e internacionalmente. O novo nome da banda foi inspirado no clube sul-africano
Kaizer Chiefs Football Club,
equipa a que pertenceu o então capitão (Lucas Radebe) do clube favorito da banda -
Leeds Utd.
De facto, esta associação e influência clubística é facilmente perceptível em músicas como
I Predict a Riot
